Labyrinth

At the start of 2022 the news makes, once again, grim reading.  I am overwhelmed with foreboding as a Russian invasion of Ukraine looks imminent. I make a giant collage of newspaper headlines, which I cover with ox-blood red paint.  Into this bloody mess I carve a labyrinth, an ancient symbol of wholeness that represents a journey to our own centre and back out again into the world.

Labyrinths are used world-wide as a way to quiet the mind, calm our anxious heart and recover our balance. Stone Labyrinths, Trojaborgs, are often found near shorelines of Nordic fishing settlements, where fishermen would walk them before going to sea to ensure favourable winds and bountiful catches, and to stop meddling trolls from interfering.
