There Is No Away

Exhibited at the Museum of Littlehampton

When the Museum of Littlehampton put out a call for works under the theme ‘Plastic’ I felt called to respond.  As resident of Eastbourne and a regular sea swimmer I am confronted sharply with the amount of waste people abandon on the beach: from bottles, lighters, vape tubes, condoms and fishing tackle to brand new clothing, towels and even inflatable boats.  I cannot bear the thought of so much debris washing away and destroying the habitat of local marine life.  So I gather it up, and dutifully bin it.  But there’s the snag:  what goes into the bin, typically ends up in landfill.  There is no away.  The plastic we so thoughtlessly produce, use and throw away, is here to stay.
